The film is based on a short story by the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol, which tells the story of Ivan Aksenti, a bureaucrat who writes in his diary what happens to him. Little by little he recounts his descent into madness. First, there are small signs such as dates that do not match, then talking dogs and sending letters about the daughter of Ivan's boss, her courtship and her charms. Ivan feels unhappy because he feels in love with this young girl. The imaginary process of his madness advances disproportionately.
